How to Care for Printed Cotton Clothing

Thoughtful care helps printed cotton clothing hold its color, shape and character. Always follow the instructions on the specific garment first, because materials and construction can vary.

Wash gently

Turn the garment inside out before washing. Use cold water, a mild detergent and a gentle cycle. Wash similar colors together and avoid bleach unless the care label specifically permits it.

Reduce friction

Zippers, hooks and rough fabrics can rub against printed surfaces. Fasten closures and consider using a mesh laundry bag for especially detailed pieces.

Air-dry when possible

Reshape the garment after washing and air-dry away from harsh direct sunlight. High heat can encourage shrinkage and may shorten the life of a print.

Iron carefully

If ironing is allowed, turn the garment inside out and use the temperature recommended for its fabric. Avoid pressing directly on printed artwork.

Store with room to breathe

Make sure clothing is completely dry before storing it. Fold heavier pieces and hang lightweight shirts or overalls on supportive hangers.
